Ep. 182 – Renegade Lawyer Marketing (Audio Book) – Chapter 15: Just Like Heart Rate Training

Ben Glass

What does heart rate training have to do with law firm marketing?

In this quick solo episode, Ben Glass draws the surprising connection between building your aerobic fitness and building a world-class marketing engine—one that runs even when you’re not in the office.

You’ll hear:

  • Why slow, consistent action beats flashy “overnight” tactics
  • How to avoid the burnout of marketing fads and focus on what works
  • What Dan Kennedy taught Ben about daily “pipeline” habits
  • Why it’s okay if your progress feels boring (and why that means it’s working)

This is Chapter 15 of Renegade Lawyer Marketing, the free audiobook series from Ben Glass. Whether you're just starting your marketing journey or optimizing what's already working, this episode will give you a mindset reset.

What Makes The GLM Tribe Special?

In short, we are the only organization within the "business builder for lawyers" space that is led by two practicing lawyers.

One thing we're sure you've noticed is that despite the variety of options within our space, no one else is mixing
the actual practice of law with business building in the way that we are.

There are no other organizations who understand the highs and lows of running a small law firm and are engaged in talking to real clients. That is what sets GLM apart from every other organization, and it is why we have had loyal members that have been with us for two-decades.

Hi everyone. This is Ben. Welcome back to the Renegade Lawyer Podcast. This episode is another in the continuing series of me bringing you my book, renegade Lawyer Marketing, to you for free, the audio version. This is chapter 15, which I called, just Like Heart Rate Training. We're getting into the marketing part of the book now.

Speaker 2:

When you start learning about marketing and we'll get deep into that in a couple of chapters the subject can be overwhelming. I understand that keeping fit is one of the secrets to a long life, but even for me, keeping up with the science of fitness can be overwhelming. The principles of marketing and fitness are exactly the same. I'm 67. I do all of my aerobic training with heart rate monitoring and my bible for that is Heart Rate Training by Roy Benson and Declan Connolly. This book has helped me achieve the fastest recovery ever from my March 2024 triple bypass surgery. And here's a cool paragraph extolling the benefits of slow but steady aerobic training. And my contention is that this also applies to your marketing.

Speaker 2:

Referring to a workout that seemed too simple, slow and short to be of any benefit, the authors say this 20-minute period may seem too short and with the intensity so low you may think that it's too easy. You may wonder whether you'll ever get in shape at this rate. But hold on. This is a very delicate period of adaptation. Your muscular system will get stronger rather quickly thanks to its good blood supply and may give you the impression that you're ready for bigger and better workouts. Your engine will start adding horsepower. Well, that's exactly what we're doing with marketing. The science of marketing, properly understood and applied consistently over time, has the power to change your business and your personal life, like physical fitness. You can't accomplish it all at once, particularly if you've never thought much about marketing before, but you can achieve long-lasting horsepower to your marketing engine if you do something proactive every day While our competition sleeps in. We're already on the road.

Speaker 2:

It may seem slow and it can certainly be boring. We can see setbacks. For example, google's never-ending algorithm changes can throw even the most conscientious marketer for a loop. And now what do we do with all of this AI stuff? Well, we're building collateral circulation. Our engines are developing more horsepower and one day we wake up. We look at our new K-stats and say, gee, how did we get here? Well, yeah, one step at a time, every day, even when it rains or the temps top 99 degrees Fahrenheit. So here's a practice Dan Kennedy taught me and of course, dan will be at our summit next month Every day, make sure you do at least one thing, one activity, to fill the pipeline. It's nearly impossible to fail to succeed if we put our shoes on and just get out there. Okay, next time will be chapter 16, don't Let Sift and Scare you. This is Ben.
